How to set up time limits – Amazon Kids+

I told you all about Amazon Kids+ in my previous post! From all of the content to the ease of setting parental controls Amazon Kids+ is a must-have option if you have children, screens, and an amazon prime account. In the post, I will show you all of the different options you have to control the time your child spends on their device and what they are able to do during that time. After you set this up for each kids profile once, the limits will be in place on all of that child’s devices that are connected to their profile. These include the Amazon firesticks” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow”>amazon fire sticks, Amazon kindles” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow”>amazon kindles.

Amazon kids+ App

The easiest way I have found to access the dashboard to set up time limits is by downloading the amazing kids+ app. The photo to the left shows what the app looks like. You can download it here for your ios device or here for your Android device

Accessing the Dashboard

  • When you open the app you will see a screen similar to the one to the right.
  • Here you will have the option to choose a child’s profile or add a new profile.
  • To access the dashboard you will select the box that says “grownups”. See where the arrow is pointing in the photo.

Logging In

  • After you select “grownups” you will see the screen to the left.
  • You will enter your Amazon password that is associated with your child’s account to access the dashboard.
  • You also have the option to enter a PIN.
  • I have found that keeping it simple and just entering my Amazon password gives me one less thing to remember.

Main Menu

  • After you enter your password or pin you are now in the “grownup” area.
  • The screen to the right is what you will see.
  • You will be able to select any of your children’s profiles.
  • Select the profile you would like to set up time limits for
    • For this example, I selected my profile I named “Kids”
  • Anytime you want to exit this area you click the white rectangle in the upper left corner that says “kids area”
  • Your child will no longer have access to any of these settings, and a password or pin will be needed to get back in
  • You also see there are two ways to control assess to the device
    1. Pause/Resume Device
    2. Set up time limits

Setting Daily Time Limits

We have daily time limits set for both of my older boys’ profiles. They can be set differently for weekdays/ weekends but at this point, they don’t really stay up later on weekends so we keep it the same for both. The boys are allowed to leave their room at 7:00 AM so we have “Stay off until” set for 7:00. This will enable them to make their way downstairs and turn on a show for a bit until we come down, this is especially great on the weekends when we would like just a little bit more sleep. They are supposed to be in their rooms at 8:00 so this is the time we have the device turn off. We have it set a little later for my older son so he can read books on his e-reader.

  • In order to turn the daily time limits on you toggle the switch so you see the check mark.
    • After you toggle the switch to on you will see the screen to the right.
  • You have the ability to select time different time limits for the weekend and the weekdays.
  • The “Turn off by” is the time that you would like all of your child’s devices linked to their profile to shut off.
  • The “Stay off until” is when you would like to provide access to all their devices.
  • Don’t forget to select “Apply Changes” to save all the changes you made

Total Screen Time Allowances

If you scroll further down below the daily time limits you have the other option to select either:

  1. The amount of total screen time your child has per day
  2. How long your child has per each activity

If you would like to limit your child’s access to all electronic content then the best option would be to choose the bubble for Total Screen time. Just remember this includes books, music, and audibles as well. However, if you do not care how long your child is on any of their devices you can set the total screen time to unlimited. They will then have access to all of their devices during the times you have specified.

If you would like to limit the amount of time your child spends with certain activities then the best option would be to choose the bubble for Time by Activity type. This allows you to choose how long your child is able to spend with each of the activities listed to the left. If you would like to limit the amount of time your child watches videos, you have the option to set this to 1 hour, while giving them unlimited access to books for example.

This gives you even more control over how you would like your child to use their device. You are able to have as much or as little control over their devices without constantly nagging and hovering over their shoulders.

Educational Goals

Educational goals can be very helpful to determine what your child is using their tablets for. While my boys are off school I have decided to set some educational goals for them. This way they are able to use their tablets in an educational way before they do anything for fun.

  • You can also set educational goals while you are setting up time limits.
  • If you scroll below the “total screen time” and “time by activity type” you will see the setup for Educational Goals.
  • You have the option to choose a time for each category or you can also choose “No Goal”
    • Another option you have is to toggle the switch to “Learn First”. If this is on all of the “fun” entertaining content will be blocked until all of the daily educational goals are met.
  • When you are finished setting up the educational goals, make sure you select “Apply Changes” to save everything.

Editing Time Limits

After you have time limits selected for your child’s profile, which you can see in my older child’s profile to the left, the screen will look different than if there were no time limits chosen as was pictured above. You can see, I have his screen time set to unlimited and his bedtime set for 9:00 PM.

  • If you would like to change any of the screen time limits or bedtime you will select where either of the two arrows are pointing. You will be able to edit the following here:
    1. Turning daily time limits on and off
    2. Bedtime
    3. Total Screen Time
    4. Screen Time by Activity Type
    5. Educational Goals

I hope this helps you navigate setting up time limits for your child’s Amazon profile. If you have any questions please leave a comment below!
