Ultimate Guide to Parental Controls App and Nintendo Switch

As of now, the Nintendo Switch has been one of the most complex devices for me to figure out how to add parental controls. It took a lot of googling and frustration to figure out what to do. I would love to know why they make it so difficult for us parents!

The main reason I found it so difficult, was that you cannot make changes directly on the switch device. Instead, you need to download an app and manage everything from there. While the app can be annoying there are some benefits to having it. You can easily make adjustments on the go, monitor playtime remotely, and even receive notifications about your child’s gaming habits. This way, you can stay informed and maintain oversight of their gaming activities, even when you’re not physically present. Plus if you are anything like me you rarely, if ever pick up the Switch, so maybe they knew what they were doing after all!

Switch Parental Controls App

The app, “Nintendo Switch Parental Controls” is available to download on both Apple and Android devices. The app allows you to set time limits, and bedtimes, as well as restrict content. You can monitor what your child is doing on the console daily as well as a monthly summary. This breaks down how long and what games your child played based on each child’s profile.

Nintendo User Profile

If you own a Nintendo Switch, you probably already have a Nintendo user profile set up. This profile is your virtual identity within the Nintendo ecosystem, allowing you to access various features and personalized settings. I, too, have set up a profile in my own name, as well as a separate profile for my son. I then made him part of my family group.

I have used the supervised profile feature on his account. This allows me to set certain restrictions, giving me peace of mind as a parent. For example, I can ensure that he is unable to make any unauthorized purchases on the Nintendo eShop or access content that may not be suitable for his age or maturity level.

Setting Up The App

When you set up your parental controls you will need both the switch and the app. There are 2 different ways you can add the switch console to your app.

  • click the plus button with the squares in the upper left corner
  • click the settings button in the top right, then select Add a Nintendo Switch console.

To get started:

  • simply power on your Switch console and open up the parental controls app.
  • The app will provide you with a 6-digit registration code.
  • Press the home button on your Switch console, navigate to system settings, and locate the parental controls section.
  • Select the option indicating that you have the app installed, and click on “What’s next” to proceed.

Rest assured, you will be given clear and comprehensive step-by-step instructions, complete with helpful visuals, to guide you through the setup process effortlessly. The app is very user-friendly, making the entire experience a breeze to follow.

After you complete these steps your app will now be connected to your switch and you can start adding parental controls.
