Getting Smarter

Bear with me on this one, it is my first blog post ever. YAY! As a mom in today’s world of “smart” living I have been realizing that my kids are quickly becoming smarter than me, if they are not already. As my kids are getting older and we are getting more and more electronics, I am finding that I have to scour the web for how to use these devices. When it comes to adding parental controls, I feel like I am trying to break the DaVinci Code. None of the devices have similar ways, some need separate apps downloaded, and some you need to first obtain your Ph.D. (just kidding with that one, but sometimes it feels that way!) All this just to make sure our kids are safe.

We are an Amazon family and own at least one of almost every device they make. In fact, I am not sure that we could get through life anymore without having Amazon around! We have a firestick on every TV we own, buy just about everything with our Amazon prime subscription, we have echo dots and echo shows, Kindle Fire tablet, kindle e-reader, you name it we probably have it.

Most of our daily life involves technology in one way or another. When the kids get up they brush their teeth with a device that tracks their brushing. We listen to Amazon music in the car, from the echo show in our kitchen, the echo dots we have in our playroom and both of our boys’ rooms. Each boy has an Amazon Kids + profile that we have set time limits and age filters. This allows them to watch age-appropriate shows on our TVs and their kindle tablets as well as music without explicit content. They can log onto their profile to watch and listen to what they want, and we do not need to worry. My oldest son and I both have kindle paperwhites that we read every night. All the kids have hatch sound machines in their rooms that play white noise while they sleep and show a light when it’s O.K to wake up. We have admitted we may have a problem after our one-year-old screamed “Alexa” when the music stopped playing in the car.

The dilemma I am facing, is that we have all of these devices that I know how to use for the basics, but I know we are not using them to the fullest potential. I have seen that your child can read books along with Alexa, get math facts to help with homework, play interactive games and much more. But I have no idea how you go about doing it. That is where the idea for my blog came. I have spent so much time researching how to add parental controls, what types of things you can do with Alexa, I have bought items and services from Facebook adds that I have tried and tested. I want to learn more while sharing it all with you.

While reading some of my posts you may see links that will take you to the sites to purchase items that I have referred to. These links will not charge you any additional money if you make a purchase, however, I may make a small amount of money for the referral. I can promise you that I will not post links to purchase items that I do not use or believe will make your lives easier.

I hope to share these things with you in this blog:

  • All things amazon
  • favorite apps
  • products and service I have tried and love
  • my personal stories as I journey through motherhood

I hope that all of these things will help to make your life as a parent as easy as possible!

I look forward to reading more! We love Alexa at out home. Each month I add one thing to our smart home. This month we are finally getting our video door bell up and I ja e started researching smart furnace thermostats. My daughter lovers her Alexa and has even created her own morning and bedtime routines on it.

This is great and I loved the energy. And I think I have six kindles, crazy, huh? I have a question though. This is your first blog post, are you already an Amazon affiliate? I’m wanting to do this also but have not applied. Any advice?

Hi Nancy, I have already applied to be an Amazon affiliate. I figured since I will have a lot of Amazon content why not. I am not sure if it is the best decision because I do not have a lot of traffic yet. I do not have fall if them now but I am on my 5th kindle! My kids either broke them or I upgraded!
